K20180 - Sōsaku Kokeshi Nipopo Doll ニポポ人形

K20180 - Sōsaku Kokeshi Nipopo Doll ニポポ人形

A vintage Nipopo Doll (ニポポ人形), handcrafted from a single piece of wood using the traditional Ichibokubori (一木彫) carving technique. Inspired by the folk traditions of the Ainu people of northern Japan, this elegant wooden figure reflects the rustic beauty and simplicity of Hokkaido craftsmanship.

The doll features an elongated cylindrical body, a rounded head with a distinctive carved hairstyle, and a traditional patterned headdress. Its gently smiling face and geometric clothing details are carefully carved into the wood, revealing warm brown tones beneath the dark, almost black surface finish.

The minimalist form, expressive facial features, and deeply incised patterns give the piece a sculptural quality, combining traditional folk craftsmanship with the aesthetic simplicity often admired in Japanese Sōsaku Kokeshi.

Nipopo originates from the Ainu language and is commonly interpreted as "little wooden child." Historically, wooden figures associated with Ainu traditions were used as protective charms, believed to bring happiness, good fortune, and protection against illness or misfortune.

Nipopo dolls later became particularly associated with Abashiri (網走) in Hokkaido, where carved wooden versions have been produced as regional folk-art souvenirs since the 1950s.
