K20179 - Omiyage Kokeshi coing from Futamiura 二見浦
A vintage Omiyage Kokeshi originating from Futamiura (二見浦) in Mie Prefecture, Japan, a scenic coastal destination celebrated for its spiritual significance and beautiful seaside landscape.
Handcrafted from wood, this delightful souvenir kokeshi features a rounded head with delicately painted black hair, gently closed eyes, and a peaceful expression. Its distinctive silhouette combines a broad, cup-shaped upper body with a slender lower section, creating an elegant and unusual form.
The upper body is decorated with flowing Japanese calligraphy, while the lower section features a hand-painted coastal scene depicting Meoto Iwa (夫婦岩), the famous Wedded Rocks of Futamiura. These two sacred rocks, connected by a traditional shimenawa rope, are associated with marital harmony, lasting relationships, and good fortune.
Futamiura (二見浦) is located near the historic Ise Grand Shrine and has long been an important destination for pilgrims and travellers. The Meoto Iwa rocks are among the area's most recognised landmarks, symbolising the sacred connection between nature and Japanese spiritual traditions.
This kokeshi reflects the nostalgic charm of Japanese omiyage culture, in which locally themed souvenirs were created to commemorate visits to famous destinations. Combining traditional wooden craftsmanship, expressive calligraphy, and regional imagery, it serves as both a decorative folk-art object and a small reminder of Japan's cultural heritage.
