K18181 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Sendai 仙台
An Omiyage Kokeshi originating from Sendai (仙台), Miyagi Prefecture, featuring colourful decorations inspired by the famous Sendai Tanabata Festival (仙台七夕まつり).
Its cylindrical body retains the natural texture of the wood, including rustic bark details along the upper and lower edges. The most distinctive feature is the vibrant Tanabata decoration, depicting three colourful fukinagashi (吹き流し) streamers in red, purple, green, yellow, and blue.
The textured ornamental tops and flowing ribbons beautifully capture the festive atmosphere of Sendai's celebrated summer tradition. The Japanese inscription 仙台 (Sendai) identifies the doll as a regional souvenir.
The Sendai Tanabata Festival is one of Japan's most famous summer celebrations, traditionally held from August 6 to 8 each year. Sendai is particularly renowned for its magnificent fukinagashi, colourful hanging streamers that decorate shopping streets throughout the city.
These decorations symbolise the weaving threads of Orihime, the celestial weaving princess, and traditionally express wishes for artistic skill, craftsmanship, and good fortune.
