K10265 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Takarazuka 宝塚
This distinctive vintage Omiyage Kokeshi comes from Takarazuka (宝塚), Hyōgo Prefecture, a destination historically known for its hot-spring culture and later for the celebrated Takarazuka theatrical tradition.
The doll has a wonderfully rustic travelling figure design, topped with a broad kasa-style hat and painted with a calm, understated expression. Its simple cylindrical body is left largely in the warm natural tone of the wood, allowing the grain to remain visible.
Black calligraphic brushwork surrounds the scene, while the red inscription 「宝塚」 (Takarazuka) identifies the place from which the souvenir originated. Small touches of pale blue, white and earthy tones add depth without overwhelming the restrained folk-art palette.
The combination of the traveller’s hat, handwritten characters and locally inspired imagery reflects the character of regional omiyage kokeshi: these dolls were created not according to the strict conventions of the traditional kokeshi schools, but as imaginative keepsakes representing particular towns, hot springs and sightseeing destinations throughout Japan.
With its softly aged surface, hand-painted details and unusual textured decoration, this piece preserves the nostalgic atmosphere of 20th-century Japanese domestic travel culture.
