This charming vintage Omiyage Kokeshi set comes from Kinugawa Onsen (鬼怒川) in Tochigi Prefecture, a famous hot-spring resort developed along the dramatic valley of the Kinugawa River.
Each doll is decorated with a different hand-painted landscape scene inspired by the Kinugawa area. One features a flowing blue-and-white river or waterfall motif bordered by dark mountain forms, while the other shows a small architectural scene surrounded by trees and landscape brushwork. The handwritten inscriptions on the bodies further connect the pair to Kinugawa, turning the dolls into miniature records of a traveller’s visit to the region.
Kinugawa became especially popular as an onsen and sightseeing destination, known for its forested gorge, river scenery and proximity to Nikkō. During the growth of domestic tourism in 20th-century Japan, small locally themed wooden dolls such as these were sold as omiyage—keepsakes designed to capture the identity and atmosphere of the places people visited.
