A vintage Japanese Tsuchi Ningyo (土人形), a traditional painted clay folk doll depicting Ebisu (恵比寿), one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin, 七福神).

Ebisu is the beloved deity of prosperity, good fortune, fishing, and successful business. He is traditionally portrayed as a cheerful fisherman holding a red sea bream (tai, 鯛), a fish associated with celebration and auspicious occasions in Japanese culture. The word tai also echoes medetai (めでたい), meaning joyful or auspicious, making it a powerful symbol of happiness and good fortune.

This delightful figurine features Ebisu seated with his characteristic pointed hat, a gentle smiling expression, and a bright red sea bream tucked beneath his arm. His colourful garments, decorated in shades of white, green, purple, and gold, reflect the playful simplicity and rustic charm of traditional Japanese folk art.

Tsuchi Ningyo (土人形) are traditional Japanese clay dolls, typically formed in moulds, fired, and individually painted by hand. Unlike refined porcelain figures, these folk creations are appreciated for their earthy textures, expressive features, and charming imperfections. They have long been cherished as seasonal decorations, good-luck charms, and representations of Japan’s regional folk traditions.

Size: 5 x 5 x 9cm
