FT609 - Tokoname Ware Maneki Neko 常滑焼
This charming vintage Maneki Neko (招き猫) coin bank is a delightful example of Tokoname Ware (常滑焼), a traditional Japanese ceramic craft from Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture, renowned for its long history of pottery production and iconic lucky cat figurines.
The figurine depicts a cheerful white cat with a raised right paw, inviting good fortune and prosperity. Its expressive golden-yellow eyes, bright red ears, delicate whiskers, and beautifully painted details give it a wonderfully nostalgic character.
In its other paw, the cat holds a large golden koban (小判), an oval-shaped gold coin once used in Japan during the Edo period. The coin bears the auspicious inscription 千万両 (Senman Ryō), symbolising immense wealth and prosperity.
Tokoname is recognised as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns (日本六古窯), with a ceramic tradition extending back approximately 1,000 years. Although historically celebrated for its utilitarian pottery and teapots, Tokoname has also become particularly famous for producing Maneki Neko figurines.
Tokoname-style lucky cats are distinguished by their rounded bodies, expressive eyes, raised paws, and large golden koban coins. These charming figures became popular decorative objects for homes, shops, and restaurants, where they are displayed to welcome customers and encourage prosperity.
