FT599 - Seahorse Hakata doll 博多人形
A charming vintage Hakata doll (博多人形) depicting a seahorse, known poetically in Japanese as Tatsu-no-otoshigo (竜の落とし子), literally meaning “child of the dragon.”
The piece portrays the seahorse in an elegant upright pose, its curled body resting against a smooth pearl-like sphere. Delicately modelled ridges, fins and overlapping textures give the figure a surprisingly detailed sculptural quality, while the restrained palette of warm beige, ivory and soft golden tones creates the refined, understated appearance associated with traditional Hakata figurines.
The Japanese name 竜の落とし子 carries a particularly charming association with the mythical dragon (tatsu / 竜). With its unusual dragon-like appearance, the seahorse has long inspired an imaginative connection to this powerful auspicious creature. Dragons in Japanese culture are associated with strength, vitality, protection and good fortune, giving this small marine figure an additional symbolic appeal.
Hakata dolls (博多人形) originate from Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu and are renowned for their finely sculpted forms and delicate surface finishing. Traditionally made from unglazed clay, they developed into one of Japan's best-known regional decorative arts, encompassing human figures as well as animals, zodiac subjects and imaginative motifs.
