A vintage Shōfuku Eto (招福干支) figurine from Kyoyo, created in the tradition of Kyōtō Ningyō (京陶人形) — small painted ceramic or clay dolls and ornaments associated with Kyoto.
This piece depicts the Ox (丑 / Ushi), one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac. The white ox is decorated in bright, auspicious colours of red and green and carries a large golden-yellow tawara (俵), or traditional straw rice bale, upon its back. Rice bales have long been symbols of abundance, prosperity and a plentiful harvest in Japan, making their pairing with the steadfast ox particularly auspicious.

In Japanese zodiac symbolism, the ox is traditionally associated with diligence, patience, reliability and steady progress. Rather than bringing fortune through sudden luck, it evokes prosperity achieved through perseverance and consistent effort.
The figurine has the warm, slightly naïve character typical of Japanese folk-inspired ceramic ornaments. Its hand-painted details, simplified form and vivid colours give it a wonderful Shōwa-era aesthetic. It is presented on a black display base and retains its original red presentation box, labelled 「招福 干支」, meaning approximately “Zodiac Bringing Good Fortune.”

A delightful piece of Japanese vintage folk craft, particularly appealing to collectors of Kyoto dolls, eto ornaments, Japanese zodiac figures and traditional engimono (縁起物).
