A charming Japanese ceramic wild boar (猪 / inoshishi) toothpick holder, or tsumayōji-ire (爪楊枝入れ), made by Yakushigama (薬師窯). Combining a practical tabletop object with the playful character of Japanese folk craft, the piece is modelled as a compact, rounded wild boar with an opening along its back for holding toothpicks.
The wild boar is also the twelfth animal of the Japanese zodiac (干支 / eto). Traditionally associated with courage, determination, vitality and straightforwardness, the inoshishi has long appeared in Japanese decorative arts and New Year ornaments. Its energetic nature makes it an auspicious motif expressing strength and the determination to move confidently forward.
Crafted by Yakushigama (薬師窯) in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan's historic ceramic centres, this piece reflects the enduring charm of Japanese folk-inspired ceramics. Seto's pottery heritage stretches back more than a thousand years, while Yakushigama is especially known for its auspicious animal figures, zodiac ornaments and traditional Japanese decorative wares.
