This folk craft depicts the famous legend of Inaba no Shirousagi (因幡の白兎, “The White Hare of Inaba”) and was made by Nakagawa Workshop (中川工房) in connection with Misasa Onsen (三朝温泉), Tottori Prefecture.
The scene represents Ōkuninushi (大国主命) together with the white hare from one of Japan’s best-known ancient myths, recorded in the Kojiki (古事記), compiled in the early 8th century. In the story, the hare is badly injured after tricking a group of sea creatures in order to cross the water. While Ōkuninushi’s brothers give it cruel and misleading advice, Ōkuninushi takes pity on the animal and tells it how to heal itself. The grateful hare later predicts that Ōkuninushi will marry the princess they are all seeking.
This particular piece shows Ōkuninushi dressed in pale traditional-style clothing with a turquoise cloth over one shoulder, standing beside a small white rabbit. The figure is arranged on a dark wooden base together with a small sign reading 「三朝温泉」 (Misasa Onsen).
A particularly evocative example of Shōwa-era Japanese omiyage culture, combining the mythology of the Kojiki, the identity of Tottori, and the nostalgic world of traditional hot-spring travel.
