A striking vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell known as a Migawari Mayoke-suzu (身代・魔除鈴), a protective bell traditionally associated with warding off misfortune, evil, and harmful influences.
The piece has a simple rounded white clay body suspended from a thick braided natural-fibre cord. Its understated form, aged surface, faded markings, and rustic construction give it a strong folk-religious character.
The word 身代 (migawari) means “substitute” or “taking one’s place.” In Japanese folk belief, a protective object could symbolically receive misfortune in place of its owner. 魔除 (mayoke) refers to protection against evil, bad luck, and negative forces. Together, the idea of a 身代魔除鈴 is that the bell acts as a small protective talisman, helping to guard the owner from harm.
Bells have long held an important place in Japanese religious and folk traditions. Their sound is often associated with purification and the dispelling of harmful influences, making the dorei form particularly suitable for a protective object of this kind.
