This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman from Maruoka Castle (丸岡城) in Fukui Prefecture, one of Japan’s oldest surviving castle keeps and a treasured symbol of early feudal architecture.

Crafted from natural wood with a smooth, warm grain, the plaque features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, signifying safe passage and protection—echoing the official permits once required for travel during the Edo period. Accompanying inscriptions and vermilion seals enhance its authenticity, reflecting the formal markings historically used on such documents.

Often associated with Maruoka Castle, known as the “Mist Castle” (Kasumi-ga-jō) for the legend that a veil of mist would conceal it from enemies, this tegata carries a strong sense of place and history. It serves not only as a souvenir but also as a symbolic pass granting safe journey through the land.

Suspended from a traditional braided cord and typically accented with a small bell, the piece produces a gentle chime believed to ward off evil spirits and ensure protection for travelers.

Size: 7 x 10 x 1.5cm
