The front of the plaque proudly displays bold calligraphy of “松山城” (Matsuyama-jō), along with inscriptions that commemorate its designation as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is strung with a sturdy red braided cord intertwined with blue, and finished with a small metallic bell—evoking the style of Edo-period travelers’ charms used for safety and good fortune during journeys.
Tsuko-Tegata is a kind of wooden passport that was used in the Edo Period as an identity card for travelers when passing from region to region. They had been sold a lot in Showa period as mingei type souvenirs all over Japan. It's also a protector for safety and peace for family.
