This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman from Miyazaki (宮崎), capturing both the spirit of safe journeys and the regional character of southern Kyushu.

Crafted from natural wood with a warm, visible grain, the plaque follows the traditional pentagonal form of Edo-period travel permits. The reverse is boldly inscribed with 通行手形, symbolizing safe passage and protection, accompanied by vermilion seals that echo the official markings once used at historical checkpoints.

The front presents a more playful and pictorial design, featuring a colorful illustrated map of the region along with figures in traditional attire, evoking travel, exploration, and local culture. This combination of imagery and form bridges the historical concept of the tegata with a modern souvenir aesthetic.

Suspended from a braided cord in soft neutral tones and accented with a small bell, the piece produces a gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune and safeguard the traveler.

Size: 8 x 10 x 1.5cm
