This unique Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a playful modern interpretation of the traditional Japanese travel pass, issued as a souvenir from African Lion Safari (アフリカンサファリ), also known as Kyushu Natural Zoological Park (九州自然動物公園).

Crafted from natural wood with a rich, warm grain, the plaque retains the classic pentagonal shape of Edo-period travel permits. The front features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, symbolizing safe passage, alongside inscriptions referencing the safari park. A vermilion seal adds a touch of authenticity, echoing the official stamps once used on historical travel documents.

The design is enhanced with lively printed illustrations of animals including a lion, elephant, and tiger, as well as the “AFRICAN LION SAFARI” emblem. Adding a distinctive charm, the piece is fitted with a small sculpted bear head keychain, reinforcing the safari theme and giving it a tactile, collectible quality.

Suspended from a braided red-and-white cord and accompanied by a small bell, the tegata produces a gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune and protect the bearer—continuing the symbolic role of traditional travel amulets.

Blending historical form with modern amusement park design, this tsuko-tegata is both a charming souvenir and a symbolic token of safe journeys, adventure, and a memorable visit to one of Kyushu’s most distinctive wildlife parks.
