VTT164 - Tsuko-Tegata from Tenryō Hida 飛騨
This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman from Tenryō Hida Province (天領飛騨国), a region historically governed directly by the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period.
Crafted from natural wood with a warm, finely grained surface, the front is boldly inscribed with 通行手形, symbolizing safe passage and protection for the bearer. Alongside, the inscription 天領飛騨国 highlights Hida’s status as tenryō—land under direct shogunal control—adding historical depth and significance to the piece. A vermilion seal reinforces its authenticity, echoing the official stamps once used on travel permits.
The reverse features a longer inscription explaining the meaning of the tegata, stating that the holder is permitted safe travel throughout the land, in the spirit of Edo-period checkpoints and regulated journeys. Additional red seals further emphasize its auspicious and commemorative nature.
Suspended from a braided cord in soft purple and cream tones, and accented with a small bell, the plaque produces a gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune.
