VTT161 - Tsuko-Tegata from Mount Bandai 会津磐梯山

This refined Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a traditional Japanese wooden travel talisman associated with Mount Bandai (会津磐梯山) in Fukushima Prefecture, a region celebrated for its scenic beauty and deep cultural heritage.

Crafted with a glossy black lacquer finish, the plaque is elegantly decorated with bold gold calligraphy reading 通行手形, symbolizing safe passage, alongside auspicious phrases such as 開運招福 (“good fortune and happiness”). Ornamental gold corner fittings frame the piece, lending it a dignified and almost ceremonial presence. The addition of vermilion seals further enhances its authenticity, echoing the official travel permits of the Edo period.

The reverse prominently features the inscription 会津磐梯山, referencing the iconic volcanic mountain that overlooks the Aizu region, long admired for its majestic form and seasonal beauty. Also inscribed is 交通安全 (“traffic safety”), reinforcing the amulet’s protective role for travelers. A small metal bell hangs from the red-and-white braided cord, producing a gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune and invite safe journeys.

Combining historical symbolism with regional identity, this tsuko-tegata serves as both a meaningful souvenir of the Aizu Bandai area and a timeless charm for protection, luck, and safe travels.
