VTT150 - Tsuko-Tegata from Nageire-dō 投入堂

VTT150 - Tsuko-Tegata from Nageire-dō 投入堂

This traditional Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel charm from Mount Mitoku (Mitokusan Sanbutsu-ji), a sacred mountain site famous for its dramatic temple architecture and spiritual heritage.

The front of the plaque features a vivid illustration of the iconic Nageire-dō (投入堂)—a temple hall dramatically perched on the side of a steep cliff. Below the image, the inscription 国宝投入堂 (National Treasure Nageire-dō) highlights its designation as a nationally treasured structure and one of Japan’s most remarkable religious sites.

On the reverse, bold calligraphy reads 通行手形, reinforcing its identity as a symbolic travel pass. Additional inscriptions include 交通安全 (traffic safety) and 道中安全 (safety along the journey), expressing prayers for protection and well-being during travel. The reference to 伯耆国三徳山 places the charm within its historical provincial context.

Crafted from natural wood and finished with a bright orange braided cord and a small bell, the piece carries traditional protective meaning—the bell’s gentle sound is believed to ward off evil and ensure safe passage.
