VTT145 - Tsuko-Tegata from Yamashiro Onsen 山代温泉

This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden charm commemorates Yamashiro Onsen (山代温泉) in Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture—one of the region’s most famous historic hot spring resorts, known for its elegant ryokan culture and centuries-old bathing traditions.

The front of the plaque features bold calligraphy reading 山代温泉, accompanied by a lively illustration of local festival culture, with figures gathered around a large drum. This imagery reflects the vibrant atmosphere of the town and its long-standing connection to performing arts and seasonal celebrations. The red seal 加賀名勝 highlights Yamashiro Onsen as one of the notable scenic and cultural destinations of the Kaga region.

On the reverse side, the inscription 通行手形 recalls the Edo-period travel permits once required for journeying between domains. Additional phrases such as 交通安全 (traffic safety) and 招福厄除 (inviting good fortune and warding off misfortune) emphasize the charm’s protective role, wishing the bearer a safe and fortunate journey.

A braided cord and small bell are attached at the top; in Japanese folk belief, the gentle ringing of the bell helps ward off evil spirits and purify one’s path, making it a meaningful feature of travel talismans.

Size: 8 x 10 x 1.5cm
