VTT121 - Ema plaque from Tanzan Shrine 談山神社

A Vintage Ema (絵馬) votive plaque from Tanzan Shrine (談山神社) in Nara Prefecture, Japan — a sacred site known for its unique 13-story pagoda and deep connection to the Fujiwara clan.

The front of the plaque features an elegant painting of a Heian-period courtier standing beside a ceremonially adorned black horse, rendered in traditional style with vivid red and green tack. Horses were historically considered divine messengers in Shinto belief, and ema featuring horses are thought to invoke protection, blessings, and successful pilgrimages.

The calligraphy on the back includes details of the pilgrim’s journey and prayers, suggesting that this plaque was once offered in gratitude or supplication during a visit to the shrine.

Tanzan Shrine is historically significant as the place where Fujiwara no Kamatari, the founder of the Fujiwara clan, was deified. The shrine is also a popular destination during the autumn foliage season, attracting worshippers and visitors seeking spiritual peace, success in studies, and safe travels.
