TC95 - Rabbit kōgō Box by Seizan 清山
This rabbit-shaped kōgō (香盒) is a tea ceremony incense container crafted by Seizan (清山). Formed in a soft, rounded silhouette, the rabbit rests quietly with its ears laid back, embodying a gentle and peaceful presence.
Finished in a matte white glaze with delicate hand-painted details—subtle pink inner ears and a small red eye—the piece reflects a refined simplicity characteristic of Kyoto ceramics. The slightly worn surface adds to its quiet wabi-sabi charm, enhancing its sense of age and character.
This work is associated with Kiyomizu-yaki (清水焼), one of Kyoto’s most celebrated ceramic traditions. Produced in the area around Kiyomizu-dera, Kiyomizu ware is known for its fine craftsmanship, elegant forms, and versatility in styles, ranging from richly decorated overglaze pieces to more restrained, minimalist works suited to tea culture. Artisans often emphasize hand-finishing and expressive individuality, giving each piece a distinct character.
In Japanese culture, the rabbit is an auspicious symbol associated with the moon, renewal, and good fortune, making it a popular seasonal motif in tea gatherings, especially in autumn themes.
Opening to reveal a clean interior for incense, this kōgō balances functionality with poetic design. A fine example of Seizan’s work, it offers a harmonious blend of Kyoto ceramic tradition, symbolism, and understated elegance, ideal for both tea practice and display.
