TC93 - Fushimi Dolls Kōgō from Kyoto︱Ningyō 伏見人形
This expressive kōgō (香盒) is a fine example of Fushimi Ningyō (伏見人形)—traditional Kyoto folk dolls—crafted by the esteemed Ōnishi Jūtarō Shōten (大西重太郎商店), a sixth-generation workshop rooted in the historic Fushimi Inari area.
The piece takes the form of a vividly colored dragon (竜) coiled around a jewel-like sphere, a powerful auspicious motif symbolizing protection, strength, and the granting of wishes. The bold use of red, green, and gold pigments reflects the distinctive folk aesthetic of Fushimi dolls, where lively colors and hand-painted details bring each figure to life with charm and character.
Inside, the kōgō reveals a neatly finished interior with a gold surface, traditionally used to enhance and preserve the fragrance of incense. The contrast between the vibrant exterior and the refined interior adds depth to the piece, balancing playfulness with quiet sophistication.
Fushimi Ningyō, originating in Kyoto during the Edo period, are among Japan’s oldest clay folk toys, often associated with good fortune and spiritual protection, especially in connection with Fushimi Inari Taisha. Ōnishi Jūtarō Shōten continues this legacy, preserving traditional techniques while producing works that remain deeply tied to Kyoto’s cultural and religious heritage.
Complete with its original signed wooden box and accompanying leaflet, this kōgō is both a functional tea utensil and a collectible folk art object—rich in symbolism, history, and handcrafted warmth.
