TC44 - Matcha Bowl Chawan of Shino-yaki 志野焼

TC44 - Matcha Bowl Chawan of Shino-yaki 志野焼

This Shino-yaki (志野焼) chawan is a quietly expressive matcha bowl that embodies the warmth and subtle irregularity for which Shino ware is celebrated. The form is gently rounded and open, offering a soft, inviting silhouette that sits comfortably in the hands, while the slightly thickened rim lends both visual stability and a pleasing tactile presence during use.

The surface is coated in a pale, milky-gray Shino glaze, softly translucent and alive with fine pinholes and subtle feldspar speckling. These natural textures are characteristic of Shino ware, created through high-temperature firing and the interaction between glaze, clay, and ash in the kiln. The glaze pools and thins unevenly, revealing areas of warm, sandy clay beneath—particularly around the foot and lower body—creating a gentle contrast that enhances the bowl’s depth and natural rhythm.

Turning the bowl over, the foot reveals a carefully trimmed, unglazed clay base with earthy tones that ground the piece visually and physically. This contrast between the raw clay and the softly luminous glaze reflects the Shino aesthetic’s balance between rustic strength and quiet elegance. The slightly undulating surface and minute imperfections speak to handcraft rather than precision, aligning closely with the wabi-sabi values cherished in the tea ceremony.
