This rustic Raku-yaki (楽焼) matcha bowl embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic of natural simplicity, imperfection, and transience. The bowl has a hand-molded form with a slightly irregular profile, giving it a warm, tactile presence in the hand.

The glaze is a harmonious blend of earthy browns and deep smoky greys, with natural kiln variations that create subtle gradations of color and texture. Its interior reflects the same depth, while the unglazed foot exposes the coarse clay body, highlighting its handmade character. A potter’s mark is inscribed at the base, affirming its authenticity as a crafted work rather than a mass-produced piece.

Raku-yaki has its origins in 16th-century Kyoto, created by Chōjirō under the guidance of Sen no Rikyū, the great tea master. Unlike wheel-thrown ceramics, Raku bowls are typically hand-shaped and low-fired, resulting in unique textures, unpredictable glaze effects, and an intimate connection between maker and user. Traditionally favored in tea gatherings (chanoyu), Raku bowls are appreciated not only as utensils but also as vessels of philosophy and Zen practice.

Size: 12 x 12 x 7cm
