A ceramic incense container (香合, Kōgō), crafted by Rakuzan (樂山) and originally sold by Saehisa 沙江久, complete with its original decorative storage box. Saehisa is a well-known traditional Japanese tea ceremony utensil wholesaler and brand based in Kyoto, Japan.
This beautiful piece depicts Tachibina (立雛), a traditional standing pair of Hina dolls representing the Emperor and Empress of the Japanese imperial court. The figures wear colourful ceremonial robes, decorated with delicate pine and floral motifs symbolising longevity, happiness, and good fortune.
Tachibina is one of the oldest forms of Hina dolls, traditionally associated with Hinamatsuri (雛祭り), Japan's Doll Festival celebrated on March 3rd. The festival expresses wishes for children's health, happiness, and a prosperous future.
In Japanese tea culture, a Kōgō (香合) is a small lidded container used to hold incense during the tea ceremony. This piece combines traditional craftsmanship with the playful elegance of Japanese seasonal folk art.
With its gentle expressions and vibrant colours, it makes a lovely addition to a Japanese tea ceremony collection or a decorative display celebrating Japanese traditions.
