This kōgō (香盒) is a work of Kyō-yaki (京焼) from Momoyama-gama (桃山窯), known for its refined craftsmanship and warm, expressive designs.

Momoyama-gama (桃山窯) is a Kyoto-based kiln associated with the tradition of Kyō-yaki (京焼), known for producing refined tea utensils and decorative ceramics that balance elegance with approachable charm. The name “Momoyama” (桃山) references the Momoyama period (16th–early 17th century)—a time celebrated for bold artistic expression, tea culture development, and the flourishing of ceramics.

The piece is formed as a small ox carrying fukudawara (福俵)—bundles of rice symbolizing prosperity, abundance, and good harvest. The ox, one of the zodiac animals (丑), represents diligence, reliability, and steady fortune. Together, the motif conveys auspicious wishes for wealth and stability.

Finished in a smooth, glossy glaze, the ox is rendered in soft ivory tones, contrasted by delicately painted details such as the red harness and the warm, straw-colored rice bales on its back. The rounded, compact form gives the piece a gentle and approachable character, typical of Kyoto ceramics that blend elegance with a touch of playfulness.

The kōgō opens at the midline and comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako). Both symbolic and decorative, this piece is well suited for tea ceremony use or as part of a seasonal and zodiac-themed collection.
