TB238 - Hagi-yaki Vase from Tōtōzan 萩焼
This elegant Hagi-yaki (萩焼) vase is a refined work from Tōtōzan (塔陶山), crafted by Hirano Kyōdō 平野教道, a potter working within the rich ceramic tradition of Hagi ware in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The vase is formed in a tall, cylindrical shape with gently softened contours, embodying the quiet restraint and natural beauty characteristic of Hagi ceramics. It is covered in a soft, milky white ash glaze with subtle bluish undertones, creating a calm, mist-like surface. The glaze reveals delicate variations, pooling slightly around the lip and flowing unevenly along the body—hallmarks of Hagi ware’s appreciation for spontaneity and natural kiln effects.
One of the defining features of Hagi-yaki is its evolving surface, and this piece shows a fine, understated texture that will deepen over time through use, developing the admired “Hagi no nanabake” (萩の七化け)—the phenomenon where the glaze matures and changes character as it absorbs moisture and tea.
Accompanied by its original documentation, which notes the artist’s exhibition history, including selections in the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (日展), further attesting to his recognized craftsmanship.
