This shikishi artwork is created in the style of Ise-katagami 伊勢型紙, the traditional Japanese stencil-cutting craft historically used to produce intricate patterns for dyeing kimono textiles. Originating in Ise Province (present-day Mie Prefecture), Ise-katagami is celebrated for its delicate cutting techniques and bold graphic designs. The technique creates a strong contrast between positive and negative space, as seen here in the crisp brown silhouette against a pale background.

The design features two expressive Daruma dolls (達磨) rendered in a circular composition. Daruma figures represent Bodhidharma, the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism, and are widely regarded in Japan as symbols of perseverance, determination, and good fortune. Traditionally, Daruma dolls are associated with setting goals and overcoming obstacles; one eye is filled in when a wish or goal is made, and the second eye is completed when the goal is achieved.

In this composition, the two Daruma appear as a pair—one large and one small, suggesting themes of continuity, guidance, and shared good fortune, possibly representing parent and child or teacher and student. Their rounded forms echo the traditional shape of Daruma dolls, while the finely detailed textures within the figures demonstrate the intricate pattern work characteristic of stencil design.

Above the figures appears the phrase 「七転び八起き」(Nanakorobi yaoki), meaning “Fall seven times, stand up eight.” This well-known Japanese proverb perfectly complements the Daruma motif, expressing resilience, endurance, and the spirit of never giving up despite adversity.
