SHP179 - Shikishi Print of A Fine Day 佳日

SHP179 - Shikishi Print of A Fine Day 佳日

This shikishi art card titled 佳日 (Kajitsu), meaning “A Fine Day” or “A Auspicious Day,” captures the cheerful spirit of celebration and good fortune in Japanese tradition. The artwork depicts a delightful white mouse (nezumi) dressed in a festive vest and golden hat, holding a lucky mallet (uchide no kozuchi), and sitting atop a woven straw rice bale (kome-dawara), with blooming plum blossoms (ume) in the background.

Each element of the composition carries a layer of auspicious symbolism. The mouse is the zodiac animal associated with prosperity and cleverness — it is also a messenger of Daikokuten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Fortune, who governs wealth and abundance. The lucky mallet represents the granting of wishes and success, while the rice bale symbolizes plentiful harvest and nourishment. Behind them, the plum blossoms — among the first flowers to bloom in early spring, evoke renewal, perseverance, and the arrival of joyful beginnings.

The calligraphy 佳日, elegantly brushed above, conveys the sentiment of a beautiful and fortunate day, often used to celebrate special occasions or to express gratitude for peace and prosperity.

Size: 24 x 27cm
