SHP169 - Japanese Shikishi Dragon from Yakushiji Temple 薬師寺
This elegant shikishi features the Zen phrase 「平常心 是道」(Heijōshin kore dō), meaning “An ordinary mind is the Way.” Written in expressive calligraphy and accompanied by a beautifully painted dragon, it embodies the essence of Zen simplicity and balance.
The phrase originates from a famous kōan in the Zen classic “Mumonkan” (The Gateless Gate), spoken by Master Nansen (南泉禅師). When asked, “What is the Way?” he replied, “Ordinary mind is the Way.” It expresses the profound teaching that enlightenment is not found in special practices or extraordinary experiences, but in the calm awareness of everyday life itself.
The artwork is inscribed with the temple’s name 薬師寺 (Yakushiji) — one of Japan’s most revered ancient temples, founded in the 7th century in Nara and dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha), guardian of healing and peace.
The dragon, symbolizing spiritual power, wisdom, and protection, complements the inscription’s serene message, reminding the viewer of the harmony between strength and stillness.
A contemplative piece that unites Zen philosophy and traditional Buddhist artistry, this shikishi makes a meaningful collector’s item or spiritual decoration symbolizing inner balance and clarity.
