A shikishi woodblock print depicts the dramatic rapids of the Hozugawa (Hozu River) in Kyoto, a renowned natural landmark celebrated for its scenic boat rides and dynamic waters. Created by Tokuriki Tomikichiro (1902–1999) a Kyoto-born master of both shin-hanga and sōsaku-hanga styles, he spent his entire career in the city. After initially studying Nihonga or Japanese style painting, Tokuriki switched to woodblock prints in 1924. Although best known for his shin-hanga landscape prints, Tokuriki's real passion was sosaku hanga or creative prints. He enthusiastically promoted sosaku hanga, and set up his own publishing company called Matsukyu after WWII to produce his designs.

He taught block carving and wrote extensively on the subject of woodblock prints, while also exhibiting internationally. His modern sosaku hanga prints are expressive with bold line work and shapes, while his traditional shin-hanga views more closely resemble ink and wash paintings. Tokuriki successfully bridged these two major twentieth-century styles, and was highly influential in the development of younger artists.

In the scene, a traditional flat-bottomed boat navigates the wild currents of the river, filled with passengers experiencing the thrill of the ride. The boatmen stand poised and skillful, steering through the cascading whitewater surrounded by deep blue rocks and foaming waves. In the foreground, a solitary fisherman stands knee-deep in the rushing water, casting his line with a sense of calm perseverance that contrasts beautifully with the river’s raw energy.

Rendered with bold lines, stylized waves, and vivid color contrasts, this print captures the spirit of Kyoto’s natural beauty and cultural legacy. The Hozu River was historically used for transporting goods from the mountains to Kyoto, and today it remains a symbol of harmony between tradition, nature, and craftsmanship.
