K30044 - Naruko Kokeshi by Mamoru Izu 伊豆護
This vibrant Naruko kokeshi by 伊豆護 Mamoru Izu (1925–2019) is a beautiful representation of the Ginzan substyle, a distinctive branch within the Naruko tradition known for its expressive decoration and refined craftsmanship.
The doll features the classic Naruko form—a straight cylindrical body with a gentle waist and a proportionally rounded head—balanced and elegant in silhouette. The face is lively and engaging, with finely drawn, expressive eyes, softly arched brows, a marubana (rounded nose), and small red lips that lend a gentle, approachable charm. The hairstyle is particularly striking, with carefully rendered fringed bangs and black side locks, accented by subtle red highlights at the temples.
The body is richly decorated with bold, hand-painted red chrysanthemum (kiku) motifs, symbolizing longevity and beauty. These large blossoms dominate the composition, radiating outward with strong, confident brushwork. The floral design is framed by delicate rokuro-moyo (lathe-turned circular bands) in red and green at the neck and base, providing structure and rhythm to the overall design. The vivid red contrasts beautifully with the natural wood ground, creating a piece that is both eye-catching and harmonious.
Mamoru Izu was born in 1925 in Ginzan and came from a family connected to woodworking traditions. The Ginzan style itself reflects a unique local interpretation of Naruko kokeshi, influenced in part by earlier woodcarving practices in the region. Around 1970, Izu began developing his own variations within this style, bringing a personal touch to traditional forms while maintaining their essential character. His work is appreciated for its balance of bold decorative elements and precise, expressive detailing.
