This omiyage kokeshi from Naruko Onsen beautifully reflects the poetic spirit and craftsmanship of one of the most celebrated kokeshi-producing regions in Japan.
What distinguishes this piece is its richly decorated body, painted with a serene landscape scene. A flowing waterfall descends through softly rendered mountains, accompanied by trees and mist-like brushwork. The composition evokes traditional Japanese ink painting (sumi-e), where nature is suggested through minimal yet expressive strokes. Above the landscape, handwritten calligraphy adds a poetic dimension, reinforcing the connection between kokeshi and literary culture.
The natural wood grain remains visible beneath the painting, enhancing the warmth of the piece and giving it a sense of depth and individuality. Subtle tonal variations and darker wood accents near the base further enrich its visual texture.
Please note that there is a visible crack on the head, a result of natural aging and the drying of the wood over time. This is not uncommon in vintage kokeshi and can be seen as part of the piece’s history, reflecting its age and authenticity.
