This exquisite Yajiro-style kokeshi doll is a handcrafted piece by the renowned artisan Eiichi Kokubun (1932–2014), celebrated for his dedication to traditional Japanese folk art. Born in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture, Kokubun apprenticed under the esteemed kokeshi maker Fumiichi Kamata, mastering the Yajiro style's distinctive features.
Eiichi Kokubun 国分栄一 was a distinguished Japanese artisan renowned for his expertise in crafting Yajiro-style kokeshi dolls. Born on July 19, 1932, in Shiroishi Town, Miyagi Prefecture, he was the eldest son of Kokubun
Eishichi. His family had deep ties to the kokeshi-making tradition, with his grandfather, Kokubun Tokuji, and great-uncle, Kokubun Sosaku, both being involved in the craft. Eiichi Kokubun is particularly noted for his efforts in reviving and reproducing traditional kokeshi styles, especially those of Sato Kan'nai and Watanabe Kojiro. His reproductions were acclaimed for their accuracy and attention to detail, capturing the essence of the original works. His dedication to preserving traditional kokeshi artistry earned him respect and recognition among collectors and enthusiasts. In the late 1980s, Eiichi imparted his painting techniques to his daughter-in-law, Yoshiko Kokubun, ensuring the continuation of the family's kokeshi-making tradition. His younger brother, Noboru Kokubun, also became a kokeshi artisan, further solidifying the family's legacy in this traditional craft. Despite facing health challenges in his later years, including eye ailments, Eiichi continued his work until his passing on July 26, 2014, at the age of 83.
