This graceful Yamagata-style kokeshi by 会田栄治 (Eiji Aida) beautifully reflects the refined elegance and quiet sophistication associated with the Yamagata kokeshi tradition. Slender and delicately proportioned, the doll carries a serene presence, combining restrained ornamentation with expressive hand-painted detail.

The kokeshi features a finely balanced elongated body adorned with soft red floral motifs flowing vertically across the natural wood surface. The flowers are painted with remarkable subtlety, their slightly faded pigments giving the piece a gentle warmth and nostalgic charm. The narrow cylindrical form is accented by carefully turned rings at the neck, while the face displays Eiji Aida’s characteristic sensitivity — delicate eyes, softly arched brows, and vivid red lips create an expression that feels calm, elegant, and quietly introspective.

The coiffed black hairstyle, framed with touches of red around the crown, reflects the classical aesthetics of Yamagata kokeshi, where harmony and proportion are often favored over bold decoration. The visible wood grain beneath the translucent pigments enhances the handcrafted quality of the piece, allowing the natural beauty of the material to remain central to the design.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Eiji Aida began producing kokeshi around 1948, dedicating himself to the preservation of traditional Yamagata woodworking and brush-painting techniques. His works became admired for their precision, refined brushwork, and subtle individuality. Rather than radically altering tradition, Aida gently evolved it — introducing nuanced expressions and elegant floral compositions while remaining deeply faithful to the classical Yamagata lineage. His dolls came to be appreciated not only as folk crafts, but as quietly poetic objects embodying regional heritage and artisanal discipline.
