K25160 - Yajirō kokeshi by Seiko Sato 佐藤誠孝
This Yajirō kokeshi by Seiko Sato 佐藤誠孝 (b. 1947) is a beautifully balanced work that reflects both strong lineage and a refined sense of color and form characteristic of the Yajirō tradition.
The doll features a broad, rounded head with a softly expressive face. The eyes are delicately drawn with a gentle downward gaze, complemented by fine brows and a small, composed smile. Subtle red cheeks add warmth and humanity to the expression, while the hair is rendered in bold black with stylized side panels and red decorative accents framing the face. The top of the head is finished with concentric turning rings, a hallmark of traditional woodturning craftsmanship.
The body displays the distinctive Yajirō segmented form, with a gently bulging midsection and a tapered lower body. It is richly decorated with horizontal bands in red, yellow, green, and natural wood tones. The intricate striping—carefully built up through repeated turning and painting—creates a rhythmic, almost textile-like effect. A fine geometric band at the waist adds an additional layer of detail, showcasing the precision and decorative sensitivity of the maker.
Seiko Sato’s path to kokeshi making is deeply personal and rooted in family legacy. Born in 1947 in Aizu-Wakamatsu, he initially pursued a very different life at sea as a sailor, traveling the world before returning to Japan after his father’s passing. Determined to inherit his father’s woodworking tradition, he began formal training in 1972 and started producing kokeshi in 1974. His work is directly connected to a lineage of craftsmen including Sato Makoto and Takahashi Seiji, preserving and revitalizing traditional techniques.
