K25065 - Traditional Yamagata by Masahiro Satomi 里見正博
This traditional Yamagata-style kokeshi was crafted by Masahiro Satomi (里見正博, 1948–1994), a second-generation artisan whose work carries the quiet elegance and expressive brushwork typical of the Takahashi Tokichi lineage. The doll features a rounded head with a soft, serene expression, framed by black side locks and delicate floral accents. Her cylindrical body is adorned with vivid red poppy-like flowers, brushed in bold yet controlled strokes—a striking contrast against the warm natural tone of the wood. Subtle red bands encircle the neck and base, anchoring the composition with balance and harmony.
Masahiro was born on November 4, 1948, in Minamime-cho, Haramachi, Sendai, as the eldest son of noted kokeshi maker Satomi Masao. After graduating high school in 1967, he spent time away from home working in a company, but ultimately returned to the family workshop in Imozawa, Aoba Ward, after they relocated and established a new factory in 1968. He began studying woodturning and kokeshi-making under his father and, by 1976, had begun painting and coloring the dolls himself—an important phase in his artistic development.
Following his father's passing in 1981, Masahiro took over the family workshop and continued to produce Takahashi Tokichi-style kokeshi, faithfully preserving the regional character while refining his personal style. His work is known for its rich, expressive florals and confident yet gentle linework, which brought warmth and individuality to each piece.
