Very old kokeshi from 1950s. Abe Tsunekichi 阿部常吉 (1904~1991)was a renowned Japanese kokeshi doll artisan from Yamagata Prefecture, specifically from the Atsumi Onsen area, where the Zao style of kokeshi originated.
He was a significant figure in the traditional art of kokeshi making, recognized for his craftsmanship and innovative contributions to the art form. Abe Tsunekichi began his kokeshi-making journey in the 19th century, and his work was deeply influenced by the rich cultural heritage of the Zao region. He became known for his ability to blend traditional elements with subtle, refined details in his dolls, often creating designs that were both simple yet full of character.
His kokeshi were admired for their smooth lines, gentle expressions, and the fluidity of the shapes.
