K25035 - Traditional Tsuchiyu by Toshio Obata 小幡敏夫
Vintage traditional Tsuchiyu kokeshi handcrafted by master artisan Toshio Obata. Featuring Obata's signature bold red and black bands and a gentle, serene facial expression, this doll embodies the spirit and tradition of Tsuchiyu kokeshi. The clean cylindrical body and rounded head reflect the classic aesthetic of this regional style from Fukushima Prefecture, emphasizing both simplicity and warmth. Obata’s careful brushwork and balanced composition highlight his deep dedication to the art form.
Toshio Obata was born on April 1, 1932, in Okitama-cho, Fukushima City, as the eldest son of woodworker Obata Fukumatsu and Chiyo. He began his apprenticeship in woodworking under his father at the age of 18. Obata first gained recognition for his kokeshi in the 1958 edition of the Kokeshi Guide, marking his emergence in the traditional craft community. Though his career was often dominated by the demands of general woodwork, his passion for kokeshi flourished around 1960. After the death of his father in 1968 and the later passing of his wife in 1976, Obata continued to balance his craft with personal hardship. He passed away on January 21, 2024, at the age of 93, leaving behind a modest but respected legacy in the world of traditional Japanese kokeshi dolls.
