K25026 - Yajiro by Koichi Kamata 鎌田孝市
Koichi Kamata 鎌田孝市 (1925–2004). A respected artisan known for his mastery of traditional techniques and vibrant painting style. Crafted from natural wood and adorned with vivid floral motifs in red and green, this doll exemplifies the refined yet lively aesthetic of the Yajiro lineage, one of the oldest and most colorful kokeshi traditions originating from Miyagi Prefecture.
The kokeshi features a softly smiling face, black hair with red side accents, and a cylindrical body decorated with repeated stylized chrysanthemum-like patterns—hallmarks of Kamata’s work.
Kamata apprenticed under his father Kamakichi Kamata, a significant figure in the development of the Yajiro style. In the 1960s, he became a leading figure in the kokeshi community, known for the bold and symmetrical floral patterns and beautifully balanced forms. He continued to refine his techniques and teach others, including his own descendants, helping to preserve the Yajiro tradition.
Kamata’s dolls are noted for their elegant facial features, sharp brushwork, and vivid use of color—traits that have made them sought-after among collectors. He passed away in 2004, leaving behind a strong legacy and a body of work that celebrates the artistic heritage of northern Japan.
