Masanori Onodera (小野寺正徳, born 1948) is a renowned artisan of the Kijiyama kokeshi tradition from Akita Prefecture. His works blend the rustic and bold characteristics of the Kijiyama style with his unique artistic sensibility. Onodera’s kokeshi dolls feature a smooth, slightly tapered body adorned with horizontal rings or bands, emphasizing the natural beauty of the wood grain. Their facial expressions are delicately painted, often showcasing a gentle smile or serene gaze. The body is decorated with traditional Japanese motifs such as pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms, symbolizing longevity, prosperity, and happiness. He primarily uses yew wood (ichii), which enhances the warmth and texture of his dolls. His craftsmanship is influenced by his mentor, Miharu Fumio, reflecting both the continuation of traditional techniques and his personal creative innovations. Masanori Onodera’s kokeshi are highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts for their harmonious balance of tradition and individuality. His works continue to be cherished as cultural artifacts that embody the rich history of the Kijiyama kokeshi style. Size: 24cm tall
