This Sōsaku Kokeshi titled Haru no Yume (春の夢 – “Dream of Spring”) was created by Kōjō Tanaka (田中晃常), a celebrated creative kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture whose works are admired for their refined craftsmanship, poetic themes, and innovative sculptural designs. Active during the mid-to-late Shōwa period, Tanaka gained recognition at the All-Japan Kokeshi Contest, where his creations received numerous awards for their artistic excellence and originality.

The title Haru no Yume perfectly captures the gentle and dreamlike atmosphere of this piece. Unlike conventional kokeshi, the doll features an enchanting nested composition in which a young woman appears to emerge softly from within her kimono, creating a sense of intimacy and quiet mystery. Her closed eyes and delicate expression suggest a peaceful reverie, as if she is lost in a springtime dream filled with blossoms and gentle breezes.

Pieces such as this demonstrate why Tanaka’s work occupies a special place within the world of creative kokeshi. Rather than focusing solely on decorative motifs, he often explored narrative and emotional themes, transforming simple wooden dolls into miniature sculptural stories. Haru no Yume is both playful and contemplative—a celebration of spring, femininity, and the fleeting beauty of nature.

Tanaka founded Kōjō Kokeshi Kōbō in Yoshioka, Gunma Prefecture, a workshop that continues today under the care of his son Shigemi Tanaka. This piece stands as a wonderful example of the family workshop’s artistic legacy and of Kōjō Tanaka’s ability to infuse wood with warmth, elegance, and poetic imagination.
