This vintage Yamabiko (山彦) hand carving is a traditional Japanese folk talisman from Kamikōchi (上高地), the celebrated mountain valley nestled within the Northern Japanese Alps of Nagano Prefecture. Surrounded by dramatic peaks, dense forests, and pristine rivers, Kamikōchi has long been associated with mountain worship, folklore, and the spiritual power of nature, making it a fitting birthplace for a figure linked to the mysteries of the mountains.

In Japanese folklore, Yamabiko is the supernatural being believed to answer travelers’ calls across valleys and mountainsides, creating the phenomenon known as an “echo.” Over time, the spirit became a playful yet protective mountain guardian, watching over those who ventured into remote wilderness areas.

Hand-carved from wood and painted in vivid blue, red, and white, this piece features a dramatically exaggerated face with wide eyes, an enormous open mouth, and wild natural-fiber hair. Its humorous yet fierce appearance reflects the tradition of mayoke (魔除け) folk talismans—protective figures created to ward off evil influences, misfortune, and unseen dangers.

Sold as a souvenir in the mountain resort region of Kamikōchi, this carving embodies the area's deep connection to nature and mountain culture. The expressive face may also be interpreted as echoing the cries and voices carried through the valleys of the Japanese Alps, giving the figure a direct connection to the landscape that inspired it.
