K18033 - Naruko by Sugawara Naoyoshi 菅原直義
A Naruko kokeshi crafted by Sugawara Naoyoshi (菅原直義, 1933–1986), a notable artisan from the famous Naruko kokeshi lineage in Miyagi Prefecture. Measuring approximately 17 cm in height, this kokeshi displays the classic Naruko silhouette: a gently tapering cylindrical body and a rounded head with a tight fit, often producing a signature squeak when turned.
The doll features bold chrysanthemum-like flowers painted in striking red hues, accented by soft green foliage. The floral design extends vertically across the body, emphasizing the elegant symmetry and traditional color palette typical of Naruko kokeshi. The face is delicately painted with narrow, almond-shaped eyes and a calm smile, framed by jet-black sidelocks and a topknot motif painted on the crown of the head. On the base, the doll is signed and dated Shōwa 45 (1970), May 18, adding to its authenticity and historical value.
Sugawara Naoyoshi was born in 1933 and was the son of Sugawara Hideo, one of the most influential post-war Naruko craftsmen. Trained within the family workshop, Naoyoshi upheld the tradition while bringing a vibrant expressiveness to his floral motifs and brushwork. He gained recognition during the peak of the kokeshi boom in the 1960s and 70s and remained active until his untimely death in 1986. Though his career was relatively short, his work is highly regarded by collectors for its energetic floral decoration and clean, balanced forms within the Naruko tradition.
