K15094 - Sōsaku Kokeshi by Sato Suigai 佐藤翠涯

A Sōsaku Kokeshi by Sato Suigai (佐藤翠涯) embodies the refined elegance and lyrical beauty that define Suigai’s artistic vision. The head, delicately tilted, gives the figure a tender, lifelike posture, a gesture that conveys warmth and innocence. Her smooth hair, carved with precision and crowned with a small wooden bun adorned by a red bead, adds a touch of playfulness and individuality.

The body is finished in a rich emerald-green tone, accented with hand-painted blossoms in natural wood hues. These floral motifs evoke themes of renewal and the changing seasons, echoing Suigai’s lifelong fascination with nature and its quiet poetry. The restrained color palette and balanced proportions highlight the simplicity and purity of form that are hallmarks of his work.

Born in Ōkubo, Gunma Prefecture, Sato Suigai came from a family engaged in the silk trade and began his artistic career as a painter under Komuro Suiun before turning to Sōsaku Kokeshi in 1946. His dolls reflect his background in fine art, fashion design, and engineering — fields that influenced his keen sense of proportion, texture, and aesthetic harmony. Suigai’s works are celebrated for their elegance, emotional subtlety, and painterly detail. His artistry earned him numerous accolades, including the Prime Minister’s Prize in 1966 and recognition from Crown Prince Akihito and Japan’s Ministry of Trade and Industry.

This piece embodies Suigai’s philosophy of merging art and craft into a single poetic expression. The gentle expression, delicate color, and floral motif together evoke the serenity of shibui beauty, understated, refined, and deeply human.
