A vintage Japanese Kokeshi doll originating from the Tohoku region of northern Japan, featuring a beautiful combination of traditional wooden craftsmanship, Japanese calligraphy, and winter-inspired imagery.
Its natural wooden body is decorated with flowing Japanese calligraphy featuring a poetic reference to snow (雪), accompanied by a small illustration of a traditional Japanese hibachi (火鉢), a charcoal-burning brazier historically used to provide warmth during the cold winter months.
The combination of poetry and traditional household imagery creates a nostalgic atmosphere, evoking the quiet beauty of winter in rural Japan.
Snow holds a special place in Japanese poetry and aesthetics, often representing purity, tranquillity, silence, and the fleeting beauty of the seasons.
In the Tohoku region, known for its long and snowy winters, the hibachi was once an essential household object. Families would gather around these small charcoal braziers to warm their hands and enjoy moments of comfort during the cold season.
