K10260 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Itō 伊東
This vintage omiyage kokeshi from Itō (伊東) is a lovely example of the regional souvenir dolls once produced for visitors travelling through Japan’s famous hot-spring towns.
Located on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Itō has long been known as an onsen resort, surrounded by the sea, wooded hills and the volcanic landscapes of Izu. During the post-war travel boom, small handcrafted objects such as kokeshi became popular keepsakes, allowing visitors to bring home a tangible memory of the places they had visited.
What makes this piece especially distinctive is its head, shaped like a mikan (mandarin orange). Painted in a warm orange tone with a small green leaf detail at the top, the rounded head playfully evokes one of Japan’s most familiar and beloved fruits. This subtle fruit motif gives the doll an immediately cheerful and regional character, while also adding to its nostalgic Showa-era charm.
The softly smiling face, delicate red lips and restrained brushwork give the figure a gentle, feminine expression. Its tall, slender wooden body is decorated with scattered leaf motifs in ochre, brown and dark grey, together with a red-and-white obi-like detail around the waist. The simple cone-shaped silhouette contrasts beautifully with the oversized mikan-shaped head, creating the playful proportions often associated with mid-century souvenir kokeshi.
