This vintage omiyage kokeshi set features a whimsical pair of kappa, the mischievous water spirits of Japanese folklore, handcrafted in a rustic folk art style. Originating from Wakahagi Wadahama 若萩和田浜, a coastal area known for its traditional crafts, the set captures a playful scene with warm humor and local charm.

The taller figure, the elder kappa, holds a fishing staff and is painted with exaggerated eyes and a dish-like head, a nod to the creature’s legendary traits. Both figures are decorated with turtle-shell patterns on their backs, a classic detail in kappa depictions.

The kappa is a water-dwelling yokai (supernatural creature), said to inhabit rivers, ponds, and streams. It is considered a guardian of water, reflecting both the life-giving and dangerous nature of aquatic environments. In ancient beliefs, it was sometimes revered as a kami (spirit) of water and agriculture.

The entire set is mounted on a slice of natural wood, enhancing its earthy, handmade feel. This piece is a delightful example of regional Japanese souvenir culture—full of folklore, personality, and a touch of mischief.

Size: 8 x 4 x 8cm
