K10142 - Omiyage folk Craft Twenty-Four Eyes 二十四の瞳

This omiyage folk craft is a delightful miniature diorama inspired by Twenty-Four Eyes (二十四の瞳), the beloved 1954 Japanese film based on the novel by Sakae Tsuboi. Set on Shodoshima (小豆島) in the Seto Inland Sea, the story follows a kind-hearted teacher and her twelve young students over a span of turbulent years, exploring themes of war, peace, loss, and enduring human connection.

Handcrafted with vivid colors and intricate detail, this nostalgic piece features a central figure of the teacher surrounded by twelve small kokeshi-style students, symbolizing the “twenty-four eyes.”

The story begins in the 1920s when Miss Oishi is assigned to teach at a small rural school. At first, the children are suspicious of her modern outlook and urban dress, but they quickly grow to love her warmth and kindness. The novel then spans nearly two decades, tracking the students' lives as they grow into adulthood. One by one, her beloved students are swept away by poverty, conscription, or tragedy. Some never return.

This folk art piece serves as both a heartfelt tribute to an iconic tale of compassion and resilience, and a keepsake of the tranquil island of Shodoshima.
